How thrilling is that project of our friend Lewis Arnold!?
We are very excited to present to you GLASS Photobook Volume 1.
Think of an "exhibition in print", with your support, GLASS can be a progressive, fully-independent, limited-edition photobook created to show that surf-related photography, art and writing are valid artistic disciplines.
Please become a custodian of surf culture by helping GLASS to be the high-quality book surfing deserves and to inspire future creativity down the line. GLASS can be an independent and deep reflection of surfing and its culture.
The mission statement of GLASS is...
“Independent visual arts and free thinking shaped by our surfing world”
"Surfing is often overlooked by mainstream media and art as a lightweight subject, a marketing tool or just an insignificant niche sport. But for a lot of us, surfing is way more than that - it can be a welcome escape, a deep connection with nature, a powerful spiritual release, as well as that radical hit of dopamine.
When you think of the changes in attitudes to the environment that have stemmed from surfing, like tackling plastic pollution, water quality, challenging big oil, the benefits in physical and mental health, the creativity it inspires, then surely surf culture needs to be protected as a worthwhile art form?
The plan is to create a series of collectible books that develop the long-standing relationship between surfing and visual art. GLASS photobook Volume 1 focusses on the North Sea, curating the best work from dedicated and respected creatives and thinkers such as Michal Pelka, Mat Turries, Tony Butt, Chris Nelson, Jeff Flindt and more.
As well as established practitioners, GLASS can be a platform for emerging talent, younger, up ’n’ coming creatives with original, incisive ideas in surfing. Inclusive, honest, fully independent, campaigning and free from advertising, GLASS photobook can debate some of the big issues…surfing’s environmental hypocrisy, industry rhetoric and the impact of surfing’s fast growth."
