Many festivals this autumn! I AM SURF Filmfestival 2nd edition will take place in Amsterdam on Saturday September 27th and propose a real nice program.

No pros, no charter boats and no exotic reef passes. Instead, Jack Coleman’s independent surf film 'Groove Move' celebrates the pure heart and soul of surfing with a solid cast of unconventional and eccentric riders. Shot entirely in Super 8 film for a truly nostalgic cinematic adventure, you’re in store for visual tasty treats and mind bending surfing feats.

Locations: Australia, Hawaii, New Zealand, Mexico and California.

Cast: Ari Browne, Justin Adams, Rangi Ormond, Derek Hynd, David Rastovich, Alex Knost, Joel Tudor, Robin Kegel, Rob Machado, Ryan Burch, Ozzie Wright, Jared Mell, Creed Mctaggart, Gavin Beschen, Harry Henderson, Julian Abbott and Ford Archbold.

Total running time: 35 min.

Director Tin Ojeda’s much anticipated new film 'Expencive Porno Movie' was shot entirely in 16mm film throughout New York and California. The overall style and aesthetic approach goes back to the pioneering era of surf film making, while remaining currently progressive and relevant.

The cast reads as a who’s who of the more stylistic and soulful approach that exists in the modern surfing world: Kassia Meador, Mikey DeTemple, Dane Peterson, Trevor Gordon, Ryan Burch, and Scotty Stopnik among many other masters of the aquatic wave dance.

The title actually represents Tin Ojeda’s feelings of the film. ‘Expencive’ because shooting the movie was really expensive. The ‘Porno’ is the most exciting part, the amazing surfing, all set to an organ and bass-heavy 70s score.

Cast: Dane Peterson, Kassia Meador, Alex Knost, JJ Wessels, Mikey Detemple, Trevor Grodon, Kyle Albers, Devon Howard, Justin Adams, Billy Death, Scotyy Stopnik, Jared Mell and Ryan Burch.

Total running time: 40 min.

Stephanie IN THE WATER

Director Ava Warbick was in Hawaii in 2007 when she first caught sight of Stephanie Gilmore, the first ever rookie to win the Women’s World Championship.

Gripped by Stephanie’s skill and poise, Ava gained unbridled access to the Australian for three years. The resulting documentary ‘Stephanie in the Water’, sheds light on the pro-surfer’s beginnings at the age of 21, through to her prolific rise to become a five-time world champion and the pressure to stay at the top of the sport.

Cast: Stephanie Gilmore, Witney Gilmore, Jessi Miley-Dyer and Darren Handley.

Total running time: 67 min.

UNcharted waters

When Wayne Lynch emerged as a wonder-kid back in the second half of the 60’s, it wasn't an easy balancing act. All the way he had to offset his exceptional talent and the surf superstardom it brings against the kind of life he’s wanted to lead - which was dodging the limelight to chase the best uncrowded waves he could find on the loneliest and most rugged stretches of Victoria’s south western coastline.

'Uncharted Waters' by director Craig Griffin pays tribute to Wayne Lynch’s extraordinary impact as a gifted surfer and Age of Youth anti-hero. At the same time it unravels the enigma by opening the door on Wayne as an ordinary guy, who managed to sidestep the glare and live life pretty much on his own terms. As one of surfing's most celebrated mystery men, Craig Griffin saw the Wayne Lynch story as a great tale that needed to be told.

Cast: Wayne Lynch, amongst others.

Total running time: 87 min.

BEyond the surface

When Ishita Malaviya first picked up a surfboard, she could count all of India's native surfers on her fingers. Now, as interest in the subcontinent's untouched beaches begins to swell, India's first and only, professional female surfer is at the heart of a flourishing scene she hopes can bring real social change to the country.

In the 16 mm documentary film 'Beyond the Surface', Ishita is joined by a unique and talented group of women – Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, Liz Clark, Lauren Hill, Emi Koch and Kate Baldwin. With unshakable determination for a better world, they travel through Southern India documenting the ways that surfing, yoga and ecological creativity are bringing hope, and fuelling change for local people and the planet.

Cast: Ishita Malaviya, Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, Liz Clark, Lauren Hill, Emi Koch and Kate Baldwin.

Total running time: 46 min.

'Gathering' is a new film from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield. It features the enigmatic and free-thinking Dave Rastovich at home in the sacred playgrounds of the far North Coast of New South Wales.

The film is a candid look into the community that Rasta is a part of, as well as a document of his happy adventures on a range of surfcraft. Ultimately, Gathering celebrates how diversity in ecosystems, relationships and surfing communities contributes to the preciousness of life.

Cast: Dave Rastovich, Lauren L. Hill, Chris Del Moro and Creed McTaggart amongst others.

Total running time: 22 min.

slow is fast

Sometimes the best adventures are waiting right in your own backyard. That's what Patagonia ambassadors Dan Malloy, Kellen Keene and Kanoa Zimmerman discovered when they set off on a 50-day, 1125 km bike journey down the California coast, hoping to see their home state in a new slower-paced light. 'Slow is Fast' chronicles the trio's travels as they stop to surf, camp, work with local farmers and hang out with artists and musicians. It’s these personal encounters that make the film pulse with life and reminds us that when we slow down and listen, we live.

Cast: Dan Malloy, Kellen Keene and Kanoa Zimmerman.

Total running time: 30 min.
