Almost two decades ago, the surfers of southern Sweden learnt that the municipality of Höganäs planned to build a breakwater straight through the righthander in Mölle harbour. Through intensive campaigning, demonstrations and paddle-outs the local surf community managed to stop the constructions. Throughout the years, the municipality and harbour association have continued to try and construct jetties and revetments to dampen the waves in the harbour inlet. The local surfers have fought back, organising themselves as Skånes vågsurfare.
Early in September an article in the local newspaper revealed that the local politicians had taken a decision to renovate a non-existing concrete “bathing-pier”, 25 meters right through the vulnerable boulders of Mölle. As the municipality itself denied Skånes Vågsurfare access to the documentation of the plans, the files were requested from the county administrative board. The documents showed that the environmental administrator had encouraged the municipality to contact the local surfing community, which the municipality neglected. The files also contain no documentation of the old pier that the municipality aims to reconstruct or no prior investigations of environmental impacts.
It was mere luck that the three weeks of appeal had not passed when Skånes vågsurfare was made aware of the municipality’s plan, and that Skånes vågsurfare managed to hand in an appeal in time. Last Friday a second statement regarding the organisation’s right of appeal was handed in to the court. The case is now waiting to be administered by the Land and Environment Court. The story is to be continued. It is evident that the surf spot needs protection and one of the future aims of Skånes vågsurfare is to strive for an extension of the borders of the nearby nature reserve, to also cover the choppy surf of Mölle. This can only be achieved by combining all the individual skills that the surfers in our community possesses. Skånes vågsurfare are very thankful for all the support that has been given us during the last weeks. Without it, we would not stand a chance in the appeal process.
