NSM: What is your involvment in Cash For Tricks ?

Wes: My involvement with the Nike 6.0 Cash For Trick series of events in France and Spain started out when I was sitting in my Oslo apartment deprived of surf when I recieved a phone call from Blue Star Revolution which is an Event / Athlete / Marketing company founded by an old colleague of mine Andy Higgins who now lives in the SW of France. Andy was the guy behind the Search World tour events for Rip Curl from it’s inception back in 2005 on Reunion Island then followed by Mexico, Chilli, Bali and so on. We had worked closely for several years at Rip Curl back in the day and he needed a wing man haha… So I’m spending a month down here working on Cash for Tricks and then the 6 star WQS in Figueira Da Foz Portugal in September. Basically working on everything from planning, set up and judging the 6.0 ASP specialty events.

NSM: How are the 6.0 Cash for Trick events different from standard competition ?

The fundemental difference is the judging criteria. We judge on individual manouvres where as standard events look at the entire sequence performed by a surfer on a wave. We give cash out for the craziest most progressive and futuristic tricks e.g ;

FLYNNSTONE FLIP

The Backflip is an aerial where the rider and his board complete a full rotation on the lateral axis, usually executed with a double grab.

SUSHI ROLL

Backside air where the surfer double grabs to superman air and at the same time rolls his board around his body, doing a full rotation before putting board back to feet then landing.

RODEO (CLOWN) FLIP

Backside air where the surfer double grabs and executes a 360° rotation and flips at the same time : Can be landed backwards or with a complete second rotation, which makes it a 720°.

SUPERMAN FLIP

Backside air where the surfer goes for a backflip and executes a superman at the same time.

KERRUPT AIR

Full ALLEY OOP, head towards the tail, with a mute and a stalefish grab at the same time.

ALLEY OOP PASSION POP

Alley oop + a passion pop before landing.

PASSION POP

Frontside Air where the surfer reaches between the legs and grabs the board then turns the board 180 degrees frontside with the hand before putting it back on the feet and landing switchfoot.

SUPERMAN

Air where the surfer completes a double grab and extends his body out so his feet are hanging in the air before putting them back on board and landing. (can be done backside)

360 AIR

An air where the rider and board spin one full rotation. (NOSE TOWARDS THE OCEAN), on the vertical axis
